Momentary Sputnik #5
Based on stylized mid-century design forms that I've been playing around with for many years now, such as my dingbat font "Satellite" (dingbatcave.com). This sputnik represents a bit of the dark side of the atomic-era, what my husband and I like to call "The rotting optimism of another era." What was once a bright copper center is now dull. The galvanized steel rings attaching the legs were once clean, and the conical legs themselves, once shiny steel, are now encrusted with space rust. Floats above a barren planet that perhaps had a thriving civilization...or was optimistic enough to think that it would.
